T’was The Blizzard Before Christmas…and I’m stuck in San Juan

DSCN2093 I’m here in balmy San Juan, Puerto Rico, sitting on my hotel balcony, waiting for the blizzard in the Northeast to blow over. Flights were cancelled left and right last night. But it’s a good thing…check out that view from my balcony.

If you’ve got to be stuck, this is as good a place as ever to wait out the storm. But the good news so far is that my flight is ‘scheduled’ to leave this afternoon, notice I said the word scheduled.

Today I want to reflect on things that happen to you. We all have things that happen to us that are beyond our control. Both good and bad. But the way we handle these things is another matter.

I could have easily said, “I can’t believe I’m stuck here”. This could have caused me to be upset and irritated. But instead, I decided to make the best of things.

And that is what I’m doing. It’s about 20 degrees in Connecticut right now, and about 85 degrees here in San Juan. So until I hear otherwise, I’m going to enjoy this unexpected tropical sunshine break.

It’s been said that opportunities usually come disguised as bad luck and misfortune. I really agree with that. At first, my flight cancellation looked like bad luck. But after an attitude adjustment, it just turned out to be an opportunity to have an unexpected chance for sea and sunshine.

So the next time something you perceive as bad luck or misfortune comes your way, stop, take a moment and see if this is an opportunity you can take advantage of in disguise.
